Pendle Hill from Crown Point Road. It was a glorious December day, if a bit cold! Taken 17.12.13.

Wednesday 18 December 2013

Day 328

The Armstrong Building. It's like a maze inside. Taken 14.12.13.

Tuesday 17 December 2013

Monday 16 December 2013

Day 326

Another building at Newcastle University! Taken 14.12.13.

Sunday 15 December 2013

Day 325

The Students' Union at Newcastle University. Taken 14.12.13.

Saturday 14 December 2013

Day 324

I realised today that I'd never actually taken any photos of Newcastle's campus itself. This is my favourite part of it, actually. It's a good thing I was walking around on a Saturday- it's normally packed with students and professors going to lecture. I didn't spend much time in this part of campus; mostly I was in the sciences section near the medical school, which is all more modern buildings. Taken 14.12.13.

Friday 13 December 2013

Day 323

My apologies for the lack of updates- exams ate me briefly. However, after a practical this afternoon, I'm done for the term! And since it's really just playing with betta fish, it should be fun. But more York Minster! I like the way the light bounces off the stonework. Taken 23.11.13.

Monday 9 December 2013

Day 322

The interior of the Chapter House in York Minster. Taken  23.11.13.

Saturday 7 December 2013

Friday 6 December 2013

Day 320

The river Aln, looking toward the Lion Bridge in Alnwick. Taken 30.11.13.

Thursday 5 December 2013

Day 319

Alnwick Castle. Taken 31.11.13. Or 30.11.13 even.

Also, I'm really enjoying the palindromic date.
EDIT: Or, you know, not, seeing as November only actually has 30 days.

Wednesday 4 December 2013

Day 318

Alnwick Castle's nod to the season- a single crooked Christmas tree. Taken 30.11.13.

Tuesday 3 December 2013

Sunday 1 December 2013

Saturday 30 November 2013

Friday 29 November 2013

Day 313

The roof of the chapter house in York Minster. Taken 23.11.13.

Thursday 28 November 2013

Day 312

A4 No 4468 Mallard at the National Railway Museum. One of the other visitors convinced a worker to open up the front of the smokebox for a few minutes. Taken 23.11.13.

Wednesday 27 November 2013

Day 311

Union of South Africa approaching York Station. Taken 23.11.13.

EDIT: I replaced it with a different version of the shot. For some reason, the host site doesn't always interpret the photos correctly- makes them too dark, or overexposed, etc. This isn't quite right either, but it's a little less obvious.

Tuesday 26 November 2013

Day 310

A4 No 60009 Union of South Africa crossing the King Edward VII railway bridge in Newcastle just after 7 in the morning. Taken 23.11.13.

Monday 25 November 2013

Day 309

A4 No 60009 Union of South Africa pulls out of Newcastle Central Station at 7 in the morning. Taken 23.11.13.

Sunday 24 November 2013

Day 308

A4 No 60009 Union of South Africa approaching York Railway station with The Tynesider charter service. Taken 23.11.13.

Saturday 16 November 2013

Day 303

Leazes Park. You can see a bit of St. James Park behind the trees. Taken 9.11.13.

Thursday 14 November 2013

Day 302

Assorted waterfowl on the lake in Leazes park- Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Mallard Ducks, and assorted sea-gulls. There were some lads with bits of scone, hence the great conglomeration. Taken 9.11.13.

Day 301

The Royal Victoria Infirmary, and a Mute Swan. Taken 9.11.13.
EDIT: for some reason this didn't publish yesterday. Woops!

Tuesday 12 November 2013

Monday 11 November 2013

Sunday 10 November 2013

Day 298

The Royal Victoria Infirmary reflected on the lake in Leazes Park. The student flats where I live are across the street, and the University campus wraps around the hospital on its other three sides. Taken 9.11.13.

Saturday 9 November 2013

Day 297

Flying Scotsman's in a bit of a sorry state, isn't she? The cylinders are in the process of being relined and realigned at Riley and Son in Bury, so the tender and the boiler are apparently being stored in York for the time being. The latest estimate for when 4472 will be ready for operating on the main line is Summer 2015 at the earliest. Riley and Son are engineers that specialise in steam and diesel locomotives, and are responsible for overhauling and restoring a significant portion of Britain's preserved steam. The owner, Ian Riley, also owns 2 mainline operational Black Fives (No. 44871 and No 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier), and Merchant Navy class No 35009 Shaw Savill, which is in the process of being restored. The Fives are commonly seen hauling the Jacobite steam tours and the Cumbrian Mountain Express. Taken 3.11.13.

Friday 8 November 2013

Day 296

In a grievous oversight, I failed to get this saddle tank's number, and therefore, I can't find out much about it. I tried looking through the NRM's collection on its website, but there are quite a lot of saddle tanks, and none of those I looked at matched this one. Taken 3.11.13.

EDIT: Thanks to Grandpa's sleuthing abilities, I can ID it as 0-4-0ST "Teddy," built by Peckett and Sons in 1941. They specialized in building small saddle tanks for shunting duties and collieries. There is surprisingly little information about them on Wikipedia, considering the number of their locos that are preserved on heritage railways. Presumably the popularity lies in their small size.

Thursday 7 November 2013

Day 295

A4 No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, and some of my fellow photographers. I totally didn't notice the kid until about 5 minutes ago. Taken 3.11.13.

Wednesday 6 November 2013

Day 294

LMS "Crab"mixed traffic loco No 13000 at the National Railway museum. They were called that because of their strange, highly angled cylinders. Taken 3.11.13.

Tuesday 5 November 2013

Day 293

Gresley A4 No 60009 Union of South Africa at The Great Gathering, with classmate No 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower in the background. Union of South Africa is fairly active on main line specials; I'll be seeing her in Newcastle at the end of the month! Taken 3.11.13.

Monday 4 November 2013

Day 292

The surviving Gresley A4s and their admirers at the National Railway Museum in York. They were gathered to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard breaking the steam speed record. From left to right: No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley (operational), No 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower (static, shipped in from Wisconsin), No 60009 Union of South Africa (operational), No 4464 Bittern (operational, often masquerades as other class-members), No 4468 Mallard (static), and the front buffer of No 4489 Dominion of Canada (static, shipped from Canada). The numbers are different formats because the first three are carrying British Rail liveries and numbers, while the others are in their original LNER forms.
