Assorted waterfowl on the lake in Leazes park- Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Mallard Ducks, and assorted sea-gulls. There were some lads with bits of scone, hence the great conglomeration. Taken 9.11.13.

The Royal Victoria Infirmary reflected on the lake in Leazes Park. The student flats where I live are across the street, and the University campus wraps around the hospital on its other three sides. Taken 9.11.13.

Day 297

Flying Scotsman's in a bit of a sorry state, isn't she? The cylinders are in the process of being relined and realigned at Riley and Son in Bury, so the tender and the boiler are apparently being stored in York for the time being. The latest estimate for when 4472 will be ready for operating on the main line is Summer 2015 at the earliest. Riley and Son are engineers that specialise in steam and diesel locomotives, and are responsible for overhauling and restoring a significant portion of Britain's preserved steam. The owner, Ian Riley, also owns 2 mainline operational Black Fives (No. 44871 and No 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier), and Merchant Navy class No 35009 Shaw Savill, which is in the process of being restored. The Fives are commonly seen hauling the Jacobite steam tours and the Cumbrian Mountain Express. Taken 3.11.13.

Day 296

In a grievous oversight, I failed to get this saddle tank's number, and therefore, I can't find out much about it. I tried looking through the NRM's collection on its website, but there are quite a lot of saddle tanks, and none of those I looked at matched this one. Taken 3.11.13.

EDIT: Thanks to Grandpa's sleuthing abilities, I can ID it as 0-4-0ST "Teddy," built by Peckett and Sons in 1941. They specialized in building small saddle tanks for shunting duties and collieries. There is surprisingly little information about them on Wikipedia, considering the number of their locos that are preserved on heritage railways. Presumably the popularity lies in their small size.

Day 292

The surviving Gresley A4s and their admirers at the National Railway Museum in York. They were gathered to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard breaking the steam speed record. From left to right: No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley (operational), No 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower (static, shipped in from Wisconsin), No 60009 Union of South Africa (operational), No 4464 Bittern (operational, often masquerades as other class-members), No 4468 Mallard (static), and the front buffer of No 4489 Dominion of Canada (static, shipped from Canada). The numbers are different formats because the first three are carrying British Rail liveries and numbers, while the others are in their original LNER forms.
